FIRST CONFESSIONS

On Wednesday 12th September the First Holy Communion girls made their first confessions with Father Tony at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. The girls were both excited and nervous, but were all very well-prepared. It was a special moment for all of them. Well done girls!

When we go to confession we face our Lord and talk to him through his disciple (the priest). We confess our sins and tell him that we are truly sorry by saying the act of contrition. Through the power of forgiveness, we are reunited with God.
The story below is a perfect example of God’s love for us.
Once, a boy stole some money from his father’s wallet, so that he could buy some chocolates which he loved eating. However, after he bought them, he found he could not really enjoy them because he knew what he did was wrong. Over the next few days he was burdened with a heavy heart and was unhappy. He decided it was time to confess what he did to his father and that he would also make amends by offering to pay for the chocolates with his pocket money. He promised his father that he would never steal again and asked for an appropriate punishment. He expected his father to be angry but instead found him calm and even smiling. Because the son was totally honest with his confession combined with the promise of never to commit the sin again is the purest form of repentance. The confession restored his father’s faith in him and so hugged him with great affection. The son unburdened his conscience with his confession and by doing so reconciled with his father.

GRADE 5 CAMP

We had the most amazing experience at Kwaggasrus (just outside Brits).  The camp was extremely well organized, and the facilities were top notch.  Our adventurous pupils loved exploring the bushveld (300 wildlife – mostly buck / giraffe/ ostrich etc) completing obstacles that really challenged them both physically and mentally.  They got to go down a zip-line landing into an icy cold dam, jumped off a high platform (overcame fear), dodged the many bugs, ate the most scrumptious food and went on a night walk where team work was required.  Early mornings, we could hear the lions roar (in an enclosure nearby / hand-reared). Fantastic fun!

BRASS INSTRUMENT LESSONS NOW AVAILABLE AT ASSUMPTION CONVENT

Myself and Mr Loock demonstrated the new plastic trumpet and plastic trombone at Primary School Assembly on Tuesday. The Primary School girls have been having a go at the instruments during their classes this week lots of them are keen to learn to play them! The instruments look and sound exactly like a brass trumpet or trombone but are made instead from high-quality plastic which is cheaper (and harder to break!) than a regular instrument. The High School will get a chance to play the instruments next week. If you are interested in your daughter learning to play a ‘brass’ instrument, please contact me at rstewardson@assumptionconvent.co.za.

ALUMNI

Alumni, we want to hear from you.

We will be running a profile post and testimonial of a past pupil every week in our newsletter as well as Facebook and Twitter so please send us your info.
Our alumni serve a very important role within our community and our school.
We would like to know what our former pupils go on to do after they leave Assumption Convent School. Where our Alumni are, what they are doing, who they’ve become, and how Assumption Convent School helped prepare them for university, work and life.
The Alumni community is a fantastic network group where memories are shared and where you can reconnect with old friends.
Please share a few memories of what Assumption Convent meant to you (200 words or less). Please also e-mail a recent photo of yourself.
This year we will have a section dedicated to our Alumni in our annual school magazine.
Please send photos and share your news with us via email. Please send us updated contact details, especially email addresses, name changes etc.
Please send all correspondence to: marketing@assumptionconvent.co.za

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Our Alumna this week is Deborah Whitting

DEBORAH WHITTING - MATRIC 1982

Having graduated from Assumption Convent School in 1982.   I emigrated to Australia in 1995, and live in Sydney.  I have a Master of Counselling and work part time in the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation field as a Family Therapist helping families deal with addiction.
I have the fondest memories of my time at Assumption.  My love of English was nurtured, and I have since passed on this love to my own children. The friendships I forged at Assumption are still in place today. We were a particularly naughty class, much to the frustration of our teachers and principal!
