Scholarship Results

We thank all the girls that took part in our scholarship examinations on Saturday 7 March 2015, we congratulate them all on their fine performances.

Our selection committee was very impressed by the high standards achieved by the candidates including Assumption Convent where our pupils were placed in the top ten.

The results were finalised by taking the combined average of the English and Mathematics marks and by awarding the Scholarship to the two girls who achieved the highest overall average.

Congratulations to the following girls (in surname alphabetical order) who have been awarded scholarships;

1. Erin Lewis from Assumption Convent School

2. Vanessa Ndiangang from Dinwiddie Primary School

Obviously there is the inevitable disappointment for those who have not been successful.  Regrettably this is unavoidable.  Each year it is only possible to award a few scholarships to candidates who have achieved top academic results.

Matric Gates

You may have noticed the gradual transformation of the old main school gates into something rather special.  The new Assumption Convent school gates are now complete and we thank out matriculants of 2013 and 2014 for making this possible.

Johannesburg City Council AGM

This took place on Thursday of this week at King David’s Victory Park.  Our thanks to Gillian Pretto and Diane Cilengi, our two outgoing councillors for 2014.They have been superb ambassadors for our school.  Our incoming councillors for 2015 are Angelique Gomes Dos Santos and Paige Soal.   Paige was appointed chairperson of Sports and Recreation and Angelique was appointed deputy-chairperson of Environment Affairs.  Having two office bearers from the same school is a significant achievement. Congratulations ladies and good luck!

Call for Chess Set(s)

Currently, we are upgrading the library and creating a reading area. This can also serve as a place for a quiet chess game. We would be delighted if any parents could donate a chess set to put on the coffee table that will eventually be the centre piece of the reading area. This chess set does not have to be specially bought but can be any set that you may have at home that is no longer in use. Any extras will be donated to the school’s chess department.

If you are able to help, please hand in your chess set at the front office.

Grade 11 Pilgrimage Cross Handover

Each year a Pilgrimage Cross is handed between the Grade 11s from all the schools that will gather for Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in May. The cross, adorned with each school’s emblem, is sent with a prayer and a message to encourage each other to be faithful witnesses to the Gospel, and remain united in following Our Lord. Each school has the cross for a week.

On Monday 16th March, Grade 11 students from Marist Brothers Linmeyer, handed the cross to the Grade 11s of Assumption Convent. The short ceremony was very inspiring.  The students from Marist Brothers sang a few songs, read from scripture and said a prayer. There was truly a sense of unity and it was wonderful to see how much we have in common because of our faith.

Ponds Skincare Presentation

On Tuesday morning during a Life Orientation timeslot, two dynamic speakers from PONDS Skincare came to address  Grade 10  pupils.

The girls found the presentation interesting and relevant and engaged in some lively discussion about cleansing routines, which types of home remedies to avoid, and the need for a healthy approach to making one’s skin look ‘fresh and radiant’.

In addition, girls received free samples of PONDS’ latest multi-action facial foam and scrub.

Senior Schools Chess Team Championship

The girls Senior Schools Chess Team Championship took place on Saturday 14 March 2015 at St Mary’s School. A very prestigious event aimed at promoting chess among girls, the tournament attracted 22 teams from around Gauteng. Nic van der Nat, former South African Chess champion and founder of ‘Chess Excellence’, was the organizer and tournament director. Sponsors included the Accountancy Department at the University of Johannesburg, as well as top accounting firm Deloitte.

Assumption Convent School entered two teams of 4, and all eight of our players were competitive throughout the six strenuous rounds of chess. Matches were timed at 30/30, meaning each player had 30 minutes to make her moves – taken together, each game lasted a maximum of one hour. Our two teams ended 9th and 14th respectively, with the B team surprising us with their strong performance by ending the day placed higher than the A team.

The top 5 places were as follows:

1.Waterkloof A

2.Waterkloof B

3.Education Alive

4.Dainfern College

5.Jeppe Girls

Pragna Singh achieved 5 wins on the day, followed by Brittany Dennison with 4 wins. Brittany Teasdale, Rachel Audier, Juliet Markantonatos and Angie Gomes dos Santos won 3 games each. Monique Romano won 2, and drew 1, while Aliah Abrahams achieved 1 win.

Tops and Tags for Wheelchairs

Recently, through the combined effort of Assumption Convent and St Andrew’s School we dropped off 226kg of bottle tops and 38.5kg of bread tags at Interwaste and Zibo recycling companies. The tops equal 1 ½ wheelchairs and the tags will contribute towards a specialised wheelchair for a child in a school for disabled children in Pretoria.

Through the diligent collection of the two schools and their wider communities, we are REALLY making a difference in people’s lives.

All the tops and tags are channelled through a non-profit organisation called the “Sweethearts.” (They can be found on Facebook.)  Over the last 3 years “Sweethearts” have collected enough tops and tags to source 87 wheelchairs.

I would like to thank the girls who diligently help sort through the tops and tags,  separating them and packing them into bags we can carry. You are real “Sweethearts.”

To all our avid collectors: THANK YOU! PLEASE, KEEP COLLECTING!

There are currently 117 requests for wheelchairs. Together we can make dreams come true!

Swimming

On Friday 13 March we travelled to Roedean for our last swimming gala of the season. We got off to a good start and were sitting in 6th place, a couple of points behind 5th place, when unfortunately the lightning detector went off and the gala was called off.

Well done to all the swimmers for showing great improvement throughout the season.

Rowing

The South African Rowing Championships took place from Friday March the 6th to Sunday March the 8th. Although we could deem the regatta a success, unfortunately our senior (grade 11) rowers could not compete to their potential due to injury. They had a good chance of doing well and I hope that with some rest now and refocus in due course that they will be able to achieve at the Gauteng and SA Champs next season. The Junior rowers performed admirably and with superb enthusiasm. The u14 quad managed 7th place in the A final and the junior Octuple managed bronze in a once off final between 5 crews.

Tennis

On Saturday 7 March our top 4 tennis players took part in the Inter-High A tournament. We competed in group stages at St Andrews in doubles matches of 7 games per match. Although we won the odd match here and there, unfortunately we finished bottom of the group and moved onto Holy Rosary to play what is effectively a semi-final and final for position. We are so proud of Skye Sheerin, Shannon Whitlock, Brittany Nauschutz and Lauren Van Den Berg who together managed to win both play-off games to help Assumption Convent finish 21st out of 26 Schools. Thank you to the parents who were able to assist with transport and support. We also thank Lauren in Matric for her contribution towards ACS tennis for the last 5 years. You have been a superb captain and champion of the game.
