GOOD LUCK WITH THE EXAMS CLASS OF 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Letter from the Martin Family

Dear Mr. Workman,

We, the Martin family, have been through a slight gauntlet over the last two years. The move to a foreign country, arranging accommodation, schools, setting up a network and just generally finding our feet has been at best, trying.
We would like to thank you and the incredible teachers at Assumption Convent for the grounding our girls had whilst students. Mieke and Emma have been able to integrate into a completely different kind of schooling system with relative ease.  We believe our daughters’ speedy progression is largely due to the phenomenal schooling and grounding they received at ACS.

We are so very glad they had most of their formative years at Assumption, as this has given them the solid grounding to face new challenges in a different world. Both of our daughters have approached their own challenges with gusto, diligence and enthusiasm.

We are so proud of them, and want to thank you and all of your staff for the incredible life long learning they gained from attending the convent.

Mieke has just finished her A levels in Psychology, Economics and English Language.
Emma is in the midst of doing her GCSE’s.

They have both missed the family at Assumption Convent and have often said how glad they were to have attended ACS.

We are forever grateful to the Assumption Convent team.

We miss you all.

Best,

The Martin family

HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION

The importance of Self-Care

In chapter 19 of the first book of Kings, there is a story about the prophet Elijah escaping from the evil queen Jezebel. Elijah had just emerged victorious from an epic battle against the prophets of the false god Baal. His victory did not please the queen and she called for his death. Elijah fled into the desert and sank into depression, he didn’t want to keep living and asked God to take his life. He then fell into a deep sleep. He was awakened by an angel who offered him some food and allowed him to continue resting. Eventually, Elijah had enough strength to continue his journey through the mountains.

The moral of the story: sometimes all we need is a nap and a snack to keep going.

Our lives are full of ups and downs, just like Elijah we can go from triumph to tragedy in a heartbeat. Facing difficulties can prove challenging because every day we are surrounded by voices telling us that we shouldn’t accept our human limitations. So we learn to hide our mistakes and pretend to have it all together. Maybe we should look at the story of Elijah as a reminder that we should take care of our selves when we’re going through difficulties so that we can have the energy to go on.

This week we pray for the grace to rest when we need to, to care for our physical needs and to seek help when we need it. We ask the Lord, that like Elijah, we may also experience God’s comfort after our trials. Amen

Religious Celebrations

We wish all the Hindu faithful, every blessing as they prepare to celebrate Diwali.

The Nutcracker Concert 14-16 October 2022 - Roodepoort Theatre

Six of our Assumption Convent girls took part in the Nutcracker Concert at the Roodepoort Theatre on the weekend.
Peyton and Amé Smith, Clara Visentin, Chiara and Stella Szabo and Amelia Kuiken did the school proud with their excellent performances. Their  dedication and commitment throughout all the rehearsals and during the 6 back-to-back performances over the weekend was outstanding . They were wonderful on stage and a pleasure to watch.
Chiara Szabo played the main role of Clara in three of the performances and nearly every other role in the others.  Her performance was exhilarating and her stage personality engaging.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORT

Inter-High Athletics

On Wednesday, 19 October,  Assumption hosted it’s first ever Inter-High at the Germiston Stadium. The adrenaline hit as fast as the girls. The spirit as high as the jumps. The war-cries, were heard as far as the shot puts. Well done to all the athletes for their outstanding performances!
Results to follow.

Congratulations

She has previously been awarded Protea Colours in 2018 and re-awarded in 2019 and represented South Africa in Riesa, Germany at the Tap World Championships in junior category. This year Ana has qualified to proudly represent this country in an adult category.

ALUMNI

Whether you were educated at Assumption Convent a few years ago or 70 years ago, there is no doubt that the years spent at Assumption Convent School have impacted on your lives. Today, Assumption Convent is still a school with soul, dedicated staff and a warm and nurturing environment. It’s only when you’re all grown up and you’ve been to varsity, enjoyed a career or brought up a family, that time slows down a bit and you wonder where everyone went!

We would like to know more about what our former pupils go on to do after they leave Assumption Convent School. Where our Alumni are, what they are doing, who they’ve become, and how Assumption Convent School helped prepare them for university, work and life.

Assumption Convent are piloting the Assumption Alumni to reunite with their Assumption friends. Some of the ideas that we have been considering are: annual networking breakfasts and forums with guest speakers, mentorship programmes and a career referral system for the whole Assumption family.

Please share a few memories of what Assumption Convent School meant to you (200 words or less). Please also e-mail a recent photo of yourself. Our Alumni will be published on social media platforms and newsletter.

Please send your news to marketing@assumptionconvent.co.za

We hope to hear from you soon.

Judging Others

A little girl was holding two apples, one green and one red. Her mother asked for one and the little girl immediately bit into the red one, chewed, swallowed, then proceeded to take a bite from the green one. The mother felt great disappointment, as she had always taught her child to be kind and to share. Then the little girl handed the red one to her mother and said, “Here mommy, this is the sweeter, tastier one.”

As humans, we can be very quick to judge one another. It is one of our greatest downfalls. There is a Mexican saying that when translated puts it plainly, “We are all mule drivers in the fields. We are all human beings making our way through life. Don’t criticize or judge others. We are all subject to problems and failings.” We often see faults in others and not in ourselves. It is so easy to spot someone else when they are being selfish, bad tempered, proud, nasty, unforgiving, or dishonest. But it is much harder to take note when we ourselves are behaving that way. When we see a peer, a co-worker, a family member messing up we are often very quick to voice an opinion. Anna Hinson, corporate image consultant and personal brand strategist said, “Within the first seven seconds of meeting someone, our brain makes eleven different decisions about them including their intelligence, socioeconomic status, education, competence and trustworthiness.”
Many of us have been judged and have judged others for things like saying the ‘wrong’ thing, wearing the ‘wrong’ clothes, eating the ‘wrong’ food or being the ‘’wrong’ weight. Looking different, sounding different or behaving different can often make us targets. The world can be a cruel place that lacks compassion and kindness for people who are judged and for those who judge. As educators and parents, we have a responsibility to teach our children about differences and to educate them about the diversities of our world, to educate them about others so that they can develop understanding and build empathy and compassion. We need to help our children see that if people make you question your character, your beliefs, your intelligence, your physical appearance in ways that make you feel uncomfortable, it is a negative interaction. From a young age children know that people look, speak, act differently. Having good, conversations with our children and teaching them that it ok to be different, is very important, and that is not ok to judge a person for being different.

We can encourage our children to value not only themselves as unique, worthy people, but that others are as well. God created every one of us to be unique, and He loves each of us. A person’s appearance, quirks, personality, talents, beliefs, and interests bring something special to the world and should be celebrated, not judged negatively. Matthew 7:1-5 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged…why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own?” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that we shouldn’t worry about what others do or don’t do, but that we should instead make sure that what we are doing is right. The important thing to remember is that each one of us must answer to God, and not to each other.

Dear Lord

Help us not to judge people or point out that what they are doing is wrong until we have looked at what we are doing wrong. Help us to be more concerned about changing what we do, than changing what other people do. Amen

Grade 6 Creative Arts – Cubism masks

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ― Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was associated most of all with pioneering Cubism, he also invented collage and made major contribution to Surrealism. Picasso focused on new pictorial ways of representing form and space. The Grade 6s created their own unique Cubism masks using only recycled materials.

St. Benedict’s Eisteddfod

On Tuesday, the 18th of October, the Eisteddfod girls joined St. Benedict’s Preparatory School for an afternoon of entertainment dedicated to the Arts through Drama and Dance. This year new items were added to the eisteddfod and included monologues, dialogues, choral verse, short skits, movement pieces, and mime. Not only did the girls get to connect with the boys from our brother school, but they also had the opportunity to spend time with the legendary Marcelle Pincus. It was such a valuable and worthwhile experience for the Eisteddfod girls.

The results were as follows:

  • Grade 6 & 7 Movement Piece: Prestige
  • Grade 4, 5 & 7 Choral Verse: Honours
  • Megan Gerber – Monologue: Gold

A great big thank you to our wonderful hosts for a fun-filled afternoon.

PRIMARY SCHOOL EXTRA-MURALS

U13 Team Tennis

Well done to the U13 team for a wonderful week of tennis.

On Thursday, 13 October the girls played against St Columbus. It was a great game to watch, and the girls walked away winning all their games.

On Saturday, 15 October, the girls participated in the U13 Inter-Catholic Tennis Festival at St Benedict’s. Although we didn’t win any of our games, we got some great rallies in and put up a great fight, making things quite difficult for our opponents.

“𝕀 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕒 𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕞𝕡𝕚𝕠𝕟 𝕚𝕤 𝕕𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕟𝕖𝕕 𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕓𝕪 𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕚𝕣 𝕨𝕚𝕟𝕤, 𝕓𝕦𝕥 𝕓𝕪 𝕙𝕠𝕨 𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕪 𝕔𝕒𝕟 𝕣𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕙𝕖𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕪 𝕗𝕒𝕝𝕝.” - 𝕊𝕖𝕣𝕖𝕟𝕒 𝕎𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕒𝕞𝕤

Well done to Jessica Howcraft, a Grade 4 learner, and Taylor Baleta, a Grade 2 learner, who participated in their first club gala on Sunday, 16 October.

Jessica entered 3 races and walked away with a silver for her 25m Backstroke (out of 21 girls), a bronze for 25m Freestyle (21 girls) and a bronze for 50m Freestyle (17 girls).

Taylor walked away with 4 medals: Gold for her IM (75m of Backstroke, Freestyle, and Breaststroke), Silver in Freestyle, Silver in Backstroke, and Silver in Breaststroke

Both Taylor and Jessica were extremely nervous about their first gala, but they took those nerves and used them to their advantage. Keep up the excellent work girls!

Dancing:

The Carstens/Ireland Ballet School hosted their 9th annual studio production with a dazzling performance of The Nutcracker from the 14th – 16th of October 2022 and 6 of our Assumption girls had the honour of taking part. Our girls truly did bring the characters to life and left their audience captivated and in awe of their elegance and poise. Well done to Clara Visentin, Stella Szabo, Amé Smith, Chiara Szabo, Amelia Kuiken and Peyton Smith for their stunning performances.
