GRADE 10 CONFIRMATION

On the evening of 8 October, five of our Grade 10 girls received the sacrament of Confirmation in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Mass was a beautiful celebration, the girls were supported by their parents and sponsors as they made this important step in growing their faith in God. We congratulate Ana Cordeiro, Victoria Goatcher, Kathryn Mkhwanazi, Emma Simon, and Angelique Tenente. May the Good Lord who has begun His work in them, continue to bless them abundantly.

VALEDICTORY

Valedictory Mass on the evening of 13 October was the last Mass for our Matrics of 2021. Fr Andrew congratulated them and encouraged them in these last moments of their schooling. The girls had prepared special cards of appreciation for their parents and they handed these to their parents before the final blessing of the Mass. We continue to pray for our Matriculants.

OCTOBER: THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY

The Rosary is a special prayer of devotion to God through the intercession of our holy mother Mary. The rosary can be prayed alone or in groups, it can be especially beautiful when prayed as a family. This month we are all encouraged to pray the rosary.
You don’t need to worry if you have never prayed the rosary before; there are plenty of resources online to help. Here is a website that can help you to get started: https://rosarycenter.org/how-to-pray-the-rosary

Our Valedictory celebration took place on the evening of Wednesday 13 October. It is the culmination of a school career, and a springboard for all that lies ahead. Our matric class of 2021 have shown resilience, grit and adaptability. It has been a privilege to witness their growth into young ladies prepared to face whatever life will throw at them. We wish our matric class of 2021 the very best, while we are sad to see them go, we hope they will return to visit us and always know that Assumption Convent School is their home away from home.
Congratulations to all our prize winners.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CHESS TOURNAMENT

The Catholic Schools Chess Tournament took place on Saturday 9 October.

The tournament was played on the Lichess Team Battle / Arena platform. Well-known Gauteng chess personality Tshediso Mpiya was the independent tournament director who set up and managed the day’s play. The organiser’s welcome, opening prayer, and tournament rules were presented as voice note recordings and disseminated to coaches and teachers via WhatsApp, who in turn passed on the voice notes to their team WhatsApp groups. Assumption’s captain Jackie Musakwa warmly welcomed her contemporaries via one of these recordings, as Assumption Convent hosted this event.

Seven schools participated in the online team tournament played over 2 and a half hours. Matches were timed at 10 minutes each side with an increment of 3 seconds per move. Assumption Convent’s Chess girls assembled at school to play the tournament in the computer centre where we were assured of a fast internet connection. Chess can really be exciting. Players enjoyed the morning of competitive chess, and Assumption Convent gave a very good account of ourselves, staying competitive throughout the tournament. The total number of games played was 365, with over 23 000 individual moves. Think about this for a moment: each move represents a considered decision, a strategy or a tactic that culminates into a game plan that is either successful or unsuccessful. Chess is a fantastic educational tool, and a source of immense enjoyment and reward in its own right. The Tournament team results were as follows:

1. De La Salle
2. St Benedict’s
3. Sacred Heart
4. St Dominic’s
5. St Catherine’s
6. Assumption Convent
7. Our Lady of Lebanon
8. St Matthew (withdrew)

Congratulations to the individual winner – Liam Allison of De La Salle.

The following players represented Assumption Convent: Jackie Musakwa, Daniela de Goede, Chloe Quan, Nina Pantovic, Emma Lauf, Haleigh Knipe, and Keziah Singh.
Full tournament results and a record of every game can be seen here:   https://lichess.org/tournament/TQiUJZcs

TENNIS

On Tuesday 12 October the ‘A and ‘B Tennis teams played against King David Linksfields’  ‘A and ‘B teams away.  We were fairly confident on the back of 3 league wins already but KDL were way to strong for us on the day. There are definitely things that we need to work on, however the better team won on the day.

ROWING

There was great excitement on Saturday 9th October and Sunday 10th October as the ACS Rowing Club participated in the Homestead Knock-Out regatta, our first races in exactly 540 days!!

Day 1 (Saturday 9th October)

5 of our rowers took part in the  racing. Lily Cullingworth and Chayanka Govender finished 4th in the U16 doubles. Sadly they were unable to race for their finals due to heavy delays during the regatta.

The U19 double with Kiara Krchnary and Grace Keegan won their match-up with St Mary's progressing to the Sunday final. Grace doubled up in the sculls winning her race against St Mary's to qualify for the quarter-final. Nikka Coetzee and Kiara Krchnavy raced valiantly in the same event but were unable to progress to the final.

Day 2 (Sunday 10th October)

Another challenging day of racing bore witness to the U15s-Opens all taking part in races.

GOLD - Grace Keegan beats St Mary's in the grand final to win the gold medal in the 1st sculls event.
In the U15 Octapule as well as open quads, our girls were beaten by St Mary's in their finals.
The rowers represented the school with pride and heart! For many girls, this was the first race of their lives. The first of many.

Well done to our ACS rowers.

WISHING

There is a wise Chinese proverb that says “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” If we could simply achieve all our aims and goals by wishing for them, life would be extremely easy. We often wish for things in our lives without really thinking things through, like I wish it would stop raining now, or I wish my teacher had set an easier test. At the same time the farmer is wishing for rain for his crops, and the teacher is wishing her students had studied harder for the test.  Sometimes in life we land up in situations, in relationships, work, school, or just difficult experiences, which make us wish that certain outcomes or consequences were different. Greg Anderson, American author and chairman of the American Wellness Foundation, bluntly once said, “Stop the mindless wishing that things would be different. Rather than wasting time and emotional and spiritual energy in explaining why we don’t have what we want, we can start to pursue other ways to get it.”

I heard one of the younger girls wishing out loud today, she was frustrated because her best friend was miserable and she just ‘wished’ that she would cheer up. I gently suggested to her that instead of wishing for it, she could perhaps go and try to cheer her up, that maybe she was having a bad day and she just needed a friend to be kind and understanding. There is a old Russian saying which sailors used, that goes, “Pray to God but row for the shore.” This simply means that when we are faced with life’s stormy challenges, sitting back and fervently praying to God for deliverance, and expecting the boat to magically make its way safely to shore, is not always enough. We have to take an active role in the outcomes and consequences of the choices we make in life.

I always tell the girls the following story when we speak about praying and wishing. A young priest was walking through the countryside when he came across a farmer hard ar work, tilling acres of magnificent farmland. He stopped to chat with the farmer and exclaimed that God had certainly blessed him with wonderful land and abundant crops. To which the farmer replied with a cheeky smile on his face, “Yes I am certainly blessed, but you should have seen the mess this land was when God had it to Himself!” In other words, know that God will bless our lives, but He also expects us to do our part. Trusting God when things are challenging is difficult, which is why it is so important to spend time with Him and exercise our faith, so that He can help us and give us the courage we need when are struggling to “row for the shore”.
Dear Heavenly Father
Bless each of us with strength and determination to always put our faith in You, regardless of the situation we face. Remind us to always look towards You and know that You are our safe shore. Help us to be firm in our faith and to face our problems with courage. Amen
