ASSUMPTION DAY 2019

RELIGION

Prayer is a gift, but it requires faith. We don’t see God like we see our family members, classmates or friends. But God is always with us and hears us all the time.

GRADE 6 GIRLS IN PRAYER
As parents and teachers, we all want our children to be healthy and successful. We also want to teach our children to be grateful for what they have been given, and to always show compassion for those in our community. Some of our Assumption parents have kindly indicated that they would like to donate the dresses which their daughters wore for First Holy Communion to the school and the Parish. This initiative would benefit many little girls who all want to feel special on the day of their First Holy Communion. If you are interested in donating a dress, please will you contact Mrs Bondonno.  A big THANK-YOU for dresses already donated.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated books for the Fun Day book stall.  It was highly appreciated.

QR CODE STORYTELLING PROJECT

The Grade 3’s have worked timelessly for over a month to complete their QR Code Storytelling project. Each girl had to write their own story in ‘Word’ and the topic was ‘My Monster’. On completion of their story writing they had to illustrate their story using ‘Tux Paint’. From there it progressed to combining the story and illustrations to narrating, using the ‘iMovie’ app.  Once those steps were complete a photo was taken of each girl and a unique QR code was created.
On pop-in-day the parents had an opportunity to scan their daughters QR codes respectively and listen to their stories on You tube.

MINI COUNCIL MADIBA DAY FOR ELDERS

We spent Sunday morning, 28 July, preparing lunch and goody bags for over 300 elders from Soweto. We served each one a sweet, cupcake, tea and a full lunch. They were very grateful, thanking us for the work we do and seeing them happy made us happy. There was dancing, singing and much more the whole day.  Each person received a goody bag and a blanket. We had to help carry it to the bus for them while talking to them about their experiences and how they found the day. One of the old ladies told us it had been one of the best days of her life, hearing this made us feel like we had made an impact even if it was just for one person.

GRADE VISIT

As the matrics are getting ready for prelims and preparing to end off their school careers, they thought it would be fitting to visit the place where it all began. On Friday the 19th of July, the Grade 12s visited the grade 0 and grade 1 classes. After playing games, drawing and teaching the girls songs, both the matrics and the younger girls had had an amazing time. The grade 12s experiences the Assumption sisterhood once again and were excited to pass that spirit on to the young girls.

3D PRINTER

We are very excited to show off our new 3D printer. Being able to complete the coding and design process by producing a physical object promotes pupil engagement and deeper learning. It also serves as a strong motivator to explore new concepts, aquire new skills and to contribute to a larger community in a meaningful way. The 3D printer will be used in both the High School and the Primary School and there will be an emphasis on sustainable design in all the projects we choose to run. We would like to sincerely thank the PTA for all they do to raise the funds needed to enable us to expose our pupils to technology that develops innovation and critical thinking skills which will serve them well in the unknown, ever-changing landscape that is their future.

SPORT

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Please can all learners bring water bottles and caps to every Physical Education lesson, although it is winter it can get quite hot on the field and it is important for the girls to stay hydrated and be protected from the sun.
  • All girls need to present a signed, written note from their caregivers excusing them from doing PE due to illness.

SPORTS

All pupils need to excuse themselves from all extracurricular activities by presenting a signed, written note from their caregivers, before the practice commences.

HOCKEY

  • Well done to all the girls who played the hockey match against St Teresa’s on Friday, 26 July at Wanderers. The girls played exceptionally well and showed a lot of progress from their previous games. They played as a team and showed a better understanding of their positions and the game. Although our grade 5 – 7 hockey teams didn’t win their games – they still made us extremely proud.
  • Grade 4 vs St Teresa’s: Won 2 – 1

ST BENEDICT'S CANSA RELAY

CANSA Relay for Life East Rand is a Fundraising arm for CANSA. They have various fundraising events all year round to raise funds for the support and care of Cancer patients. As one of their new initiatives for the 2019/2020 year ahead, they would like to introduce the CANSA Swim Relay. This is an adaptation of the Swim Across America initiative in the USA which is an extremely successful initiative that raises hundreds of thousands of Dollars each year for Cancer.

Miss Pullen and Miss Tennant are extremely excited about this initiative and we would like to get as many high school and primary school girls involved as possible. If you are interested, please see the picture below. Names need to be in by Monday, 5 August and money needs to be paid to Miss Tennant (Primary School) and Miss Pullen (High School) by Tuesday, 6 August. If you would like more information about this event, please don’t hesitate to ask. ctennant@assumptionconvent.co.za

ALUMNI

Alumni, we want to hear from you.

We will be running a profile post and testimonial of a past pupil every week in our newsletter as well as Facebook and Twitter so please send us your info.
Our alumni serve a very important role within our community and our school.
We would like to know what our former pupils go on to do after they leave Assumption Convent School. Where our Alumni are, what they are doing, who they’ve become, and how Assumption Convent School helped prepare them for university, work and life.
The Alumni community is a fantastic network group where memories are shared and where you can reconnect with old friends.
Please share a few memories of what Assumption Convent meant to you (200 words or less). Please also e-mail a recent photo of yourself.
This year we will have a section dedicated to our Alumni in our annual school magazine.
Please send photos and share your news with us via email. Please send us updated contact details, especially email addresses, name changes etc.
Please send all correspondence to: marketing@assumptionconvent.co.za

Hoping to hear from you soon.
