GRADE 7 THANKSGIVING MASS

On Friday 26th October the Grade 7 girls joined several other Catholic schools for their annual Grade 7 Thanksgiving Mass. The event was hosted by St Columba in Benoni and Mass was celebrated in St Patrick’s Church. Schools in attendance were St Catherine’s, Veritas, Emaromeni, Christian Brother’s College, St Dominic’s and Holy Rosary. It was a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Evans, and our girls participated with respect and enjoyment.

THE FAITHFULL DEPARTED - ALL SOUL'S DAY 2nd NOVEMBER

As Catholics, we begin November by remembering those who have died. We call the first two days of November All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
On All Saints Day and All Souls Day we remember that we are members of the People of God. United with God, we are also united with all Christians who have come before us in the Communion of Saints.
We pray for those who have died because we have hope that they will live with God forever and that we will be reunited with them.

CONDOLENCES

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Goosen family who have lost two close family members.

OPENING OF GRADE 000 IN JANUARY 2019!

We are excited to announce that Assumption Convent School will be opening a Grade 000 in January next year. Our theme is ‘Learn to play, play to learn’. The programme has been carefully crafted to ensure that the children (girls and boys from the age of 3 years) learn through play in a safe, caring, Christian environment. The curriculum is innovative and world class and will give the children an excellent foundation. The fees are very competitive and include aftercare.

Places are limited and to avoid disappointment, please apply as soon as possible. Contact marketing@assumptionconvent.co.za or 011 616 5053 for more info.

PTA PAINT NIGHT

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY

Outdoor Classroom Day is a campaign to celebrate and inspire play and learning outside the classroom. By getting involved, we joined a worldwide movement of almost 3.5 million children standing up for outdoor learning and setting an example to others that outdoor play matters. The campaign started in London, England, and has now gone global.

  • Grade 1s created a leaf colour wheel. The girls explored through the school gardens for leaves and then made pastel rubbings. They then constructed a primary and secondary colour wheel.
  • Grade 2s painted rocks and decorated with positive sayings.
  • Grade 4s planted seeds.
  • Grade 5s learned about “Grillerige Goggas” (insects) in Afrikaans. They learned new vocabulary, enjoyed their time outside and found many insects in our school’s beautiful gardens. This activity was extended into their Creepy Crawly Insect textured art lesson. They also made bricks as a Natural Science processing activity.
  • Grade 6s wrote poetry outside, we are looking forward to reading and listening to their outdoor experience.
  • Grade 7s did a Science practical outside where they dissected a fish.

The girls and teachers had a wonderful time exploring new ideas outdoors.

GRADE 3 OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY

On Outdoor Classroom Day the Grade 3’s made Journey Sticks. Their first task was to draw a map of their journey around the school. Their second task was to collect small objects they could found along the way. As they collected their items, they had to tie it to their sticks. The girls managed to find seed pods, flowers, feathers and many other items. An enjoyable outdoor experience!

ALUMNI

Alumni, we want to hear from you.

We will be running a profile post and testimonial of a past pupil every week in our newsletter as well as Facebook and Twitter so please send us your info.
Our alumni serve a very important role within our community and our school.
We would like to know what our former pupils go on to do after they leave Assumption Convent School. Where our Alumni are, what they are doing, who they’ve become, and how Assumption Convent School helped prepare them for university, work and life.
The Alumni community is a fantastic network group where memories are shared and where you can reconnect with old friends.
Please share a few memories of what Assumption Convent meant to you (200 words or less). Please also e-mail a recent photo of yourself.
This year we will have a section dedicated to our Alumni in our annual school magazine.
Please send photos and share your news with us via email. Please send us updated contact details, especially email addresses, name changes etc.
Please send all correspondence to: marketing@assumptionconvent.co.za

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Our Alumna this week is Cassandra Dunstan

CASSANDRA DUNSTAN  -  MATRIC 2012

Assumption Convent gave me a stable foundation on which I could build my career. They planted the seeds which allowed me to prosper in my tertiary education studies. A thorough work ethic was instilled in me – I have taken this work ethic with me into my tertiary studies. I have graduated with a Masters in Economics and will start work as an economist at the National Treasury in January 2019.

ANDREA CABANAC

On 20 October, I represented Wits University alongside a colleague from Wits at the annual Child Law Moot Competition. There were 9 universities from all over South Africa that competed.
The same hypothetical set of facts was given to each participating team from each university and we had to draft Heads of Argument for both opposing parties in the case as well as present oral arguments to the court.  My partner and I made it to the finals against the University of Stellenbosch and we won the overall competition which was adjudicated in the Pretoria High Court in front of a Judge and two practicing attorneys.  Furthermore, I won Best Speaker of the whole competition.
