RELIGION
Love One Another - "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another" (Jesus said this in John 13:34-35).
In keeping with learning about the Fruits of the Spirit, I have been discussing the story below with the girls and linking it to the celebrations of Nelson Mandela day, and what we can each do to spread love.
A father punished his young daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became angry when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the girl brought the gift to her father on Christmas day and said, “This is for you, daddy.”
The man became embarrassed by his overreaction a few days before, but his anger continued when he saw that the box was empty. He yelled at her, “Don’t you know, when you give someone a gift, there’s supposed to be something inside?”
The little girl looked up at her dad with tears in her eyes and cried; “Daddy, it’s not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They’re all for you, daddy.”
The father was devastated. He put his arms around his daughter and asked her to forgive him.
The father kept the gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was feeling down, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
Moral of the story: Love is the most precious gift in the world.
Some of the Grade 6 girls had this to say about spreading love and good will :
- “We as humans should treat each other with respect and we should live in peace.’ Mashaka Musubi
- ‘Nelson Mandela day means peace, love, kindness and charity. We share on this day and try not to fight.’ Bianca De Andrade
- ‘It is better to give than to always receive.’ Layla El-Lakkis
- ‘We can change South Africa and the world. We can help homeless people and animals. Doing this gives me hope.’ Ilhaam Jaffar

ART EISTEDDFOD AT ST BENEDICT'S

On Wednesday, the girls who took part in St Benedict’s Art Eisteddfod went and viewed their art that was on display at the prep school. We left feeling very proud of the art we submitted. Each piece submitted reflected the artists personal interpretation of one of the given themes. Grade 4: Happiness, Grade 5: Excitement, Grade 6: Strength and Grade 7: Power. This resulted in a variety of highly individual submissions.
We congratulate our girls for their effort, commitment and achievement in their first ever Art Eisteddfod.
A special thanks goes from our budding artists to Mrs Comaroff who tirelessly provided guidance and encouragement to all participants.

STEM DAY

During the first week back at school Grade 4 spent 2 days working on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mechanics) projects. Each group researched, designed and built a bridge using 30 ice-cream sticks, and a tower using tape and newspaper. At the end of the 2 days we tested our designs. The strongest bridge supported 31 books and the best tower included a tripod structure on a triangular base.
During the 2 days we also built biospheres in which we hope to grow herbs and we have started constructing a variety of homes indigenous to South African people.

Our Grade 5 pupils had the awesome privilege of visiting Rand Water Vereeniging. They were treated to a lecture followed by a Q & A session. Next was the experimental phase where our pupils were asked to purify the water. This was simply a “watered down” version of the plant which they visited next. It was a fascinating, learning experience. What was seen will be remembered!

Our alumni serve a very important role within our community and our school.
We would like to know what our former pupils go on to do after they leave Assumption Convent School. Where our Alumni are, what they are doing, who they’ve become, and how Assumption Convent School helped prepare them for university, work and life.
The Alumni community is a fantastic network group where memories are shared and where you can reconnect with old friends.
Please share a few memories of what Assumption Convent meant to you (200 words or less). Please also e-mail a recent photo of yourself.
This year we will have a section dedicated to our Alumni in our annual school magazine.

Our Alumna this week is Andrea Cabanac
ANDREA CABANAC - MATRIC 2013

Assumption Convent School taught me the values of honour, commitment and to always pursue excellence. My spiritual, intellectual and physical flourishment has been made possible by the environment that Assumption Convent School created for us as learners and which moulded us as adults. By offering the highest quality education, extra-murals that range from a multitude of sports and cultural activities and sustaining the preservation of Catholic values – this way of being “Fully Alive” has come more naturally because of Assumption Convent School, for which I am eternally grateful.
Andrea matriculated in 2013, and is currently studying towards her LLB Degree.
