MARRIAGE IS LEKKER AND LOVE MATTERS

On Wednesday night my husband and I had the privilege of sharing our love story with the Grade 9s at Love Matters. The topic was entitled “Marriage is Lekker”. Preparing the talk reminded me of the real gift that marriage is and how blessed I am to be called to that vocation of love. The girls were the perfect audience their questions were deep and mature. Speaking to them about this significant topic and hearing their questions in turn reminded me of how blessed I am to be called to my secondary vocation – that of teaching. To have the privilege of watching these young women discover that life is all about love and that our Lord, the Author of Love, loves them totally and has a perfect plan for their lives is truly wonderful.

CHEER CAPTAIN 2018/2019 - Reabetswe Modiga

Throughout various inter-house events, the Cheer Captain was something which we have always wanted to implement and seeing that this role in our school seamlessly correlated with this years prefect body goal of building the school spirit, it was the perfect opportunity to put action to this idea and bring the school spirit alive through one who showed it the most. One can simply say that the Cheer Captain is the mascot of the entire school, playing a pivotal role in energising and driving participation. It is key to note that the Cheer Captain was voted for by fellow pupils of Assumption, showing the strong affinity amongst the pupils. We hope that as years come to pass, the Cheer Captain will be a role to aspire to, epitomising the sheer enthusiasm which brings the entire school together.

FASHION SHOW

’A Million Dreams’ Fashion show took place on Saturday 14 July. The show was spectacular with amazing performances by MC Pacou Mutombo, Havoc Dance Group, Oriental Fire and many others. The show was an MDC fundraiser for Assumption Convent and was organised and directed by Mrs Vanda Marques and Bela Marques. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to these ladies who spent over 3 months rehearsing every weekend with the girls and boys. A big thank you to the girls and boys who modelled for the show and to everyone else that was involved and was part of the show.

LEADERSHIP CAMP

On 6-8 July the Grade 11 pupils went on a Leaderships camp at the Container House on the Vaal river. While on camp the girls were split into groups and were given the opportunity to get to know their group members outside of the usual school environment. Various activities were completed such as obstacle courses, building rafts and numerous group discussions. They also attended talks where they were made aware of true leadership qualities and what is expected of a leader. They came back feeling more prepared and aware of their matric year and what they want to achieve. Prefect elections are currently underway. It was a successful camp and we are grateful to Miss Pullen, Mrs Goosen and all the staff at the Container House for their time and effort to make the weekend a memorable one.

SPORT

Assumpta Wins Inter-House Hockey

Assumpta Inter-House hockey winners                                                                                              Old girls vs 1st Team hockey match

2nd Team vs Parents and Coaches

On Saturday the 14th of July Assumption Convent held their inter-house hockey at St Benedict's on their Astro turf.  The standard of hockey was great as well as the sportsmanship where players from other houses helped teams that were short a player or 2.  The hockey was competitive and the girls played hard.  In the end Assumpta won with 2 victories followed by Rosaria and then Paulist in tightly contested matches.
The 2nds then played against some dads, a mom, a sister, 2 boyfriends and 2 coaches.  The parents got a victory mostly thanks to the young guns running the show in the middle. The old girls arrived wearing their usual black.  Once again it was lovely to see players from different years from 2017 all the way into the early 2000s.  It was great to see old faces. The current 1st team had to work hard for their 1-0 victory.  It was a fun morning and great to keep some traditions going.
Thank you to the players, parents and old girls for your support.

PAULIST WINS INTER-HOUSE NETBALL

On Saturday the 14th of July we played our inter-house netball at school.  Each house had a junior and senior team, then there was the 2nds vs coaches match followed by the 1sts vs the old girls.  Despite it being cold and blustery a good time was had by all. Thank you to the coaches and parents for your support, to the old girls for your time and to the PTA for selling drinks and bacon rolls.

Our Alumna this week is Andrea Cabanac

ANDREA CABANAC  - MATRIC 2013

Assumption Convent School taught me the values of honour, commitment and to always pursue excellence. My spiritual, intellectual and physical flourishment has been made possible by the environment that Assumption Convent School created for us as learners and which moulded us as adults. By offering the highest quality education, extra-murals that range from a multitude of sports and cultural activities and sustaining the preservation of Catholic values – this way of being “Fully Alive” has come more naturally because of Assumption Convent School, for which I am eternally grateful.
Andrea matriculated in 2013, and is currently studying towards her LLB Degree.
