ACS HIGH SCHOOL WINS THE ST. JEROME BIBLE QUIZ

On Saturday at 8am, the girls were ready for the challenge at St. Benedict’s. The pupils from St. Thomas, Veritas, Holy Rosary, St. Catherine and St. Benedict's were our rivals. There were a total of 10 teams! Two teams from Assumption participated. Before they started, we all realized that the most important thing had been done: we had learnt about the Book of Samuel and enjoyed ourselves tremendously while studying, therefore, the only thing for them was to enjoy themselves during the Bible Quiz and to keep calm. And they did it! After four rounds of questions, Brittany Pearson, Angelia Antonie, Ella Matthews, Tiziana Di Santolo, Micaela de Gouveia and Tia Monique Shunmugam answered all the questions. Finally, the moment for prizes arrived and our A team won!
Personally, I will relish in my heart, the girls desire to learn and their hard work. At the end of everything, one of them told me that despite having won, what they had done was to learn more about Samuel! I could only smile (and I am sure that from Heaven, God and Samuel were also smiling at our girls).

MASS ON FRIDAY

Please note that the girls will finish at 14h00 on Fridays except for the following Fridays.  On these Fridays we will have mass in the morning and the girls will finish at 14h30.

Our young scientists took to a new stage this year by making the move from the Ekurhuleni Region to the Johannesburg Region. The competition was strong amongst the other schools in attendance and it was a learning curve for our pupils. Congratulations to our grade 8 and 9 pupils who found themselves challenged and grew in confidence, organisation, determination and of course the love of science.
I look forward to your efforts in the Johannesburg Regional Eskom Science Expo (27th & 28th July 2018).

Congratulations to the girls who received medals and are now going through to the Regionals which will be held in July.

Grade 8

  • Catarina Regal – Silver Medal
  • Kelsey Kearns – Silver Medal

Grade 9

  • Brittany Pearson – Silver Medal
  • Angelia Antonie – Bronze Medal
  • Nicole da Silva – Bronze Medal
  • Nadia Sousa - Bronze Medal

GENERAL

LIP SYNC BATTLE

The Lip Synch Battle went extremely well. There were 10 groups that brought an amazing energy to the stage and had the rest of the school on their feet during their performances. From ABBA to High School Musical, there was a lovely variety of songs that were performed. Unfortunately, there could only be one winner:
1st Place – “Beyoncé’s Back” with a Beyoncé mashup
2nd Place – The Rosaria Matrics with a highschool musical twist
3rd Place – Carmen and Taylor Mileder with Gimme Gimme Gimme by ABBA

It was a very exciting day and fun for everyone.

SENIOR DEBATING

ACS Cyan competed in rounds 4 to 6 of the SACEE championship league on Saturday. They have won 2 maybe 3 out of the 6 debates and there's a possibility that they may go through to the next round in July. The standard was extremely high but our girls rose to the occasion and have done Assumption proud.

DRAMA

Assumption convent was part of the Festival of dramatic excellence for the first time this year.  The girls did exceptionally well and received 7 nominations in the following categories:
Best Newcomers to the festival, best soundscape, best make up, best costume, best chorus work, best ensemble and best lighting.
Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a huge thank you to everyone who supported us.

Well done!

AUTUMN CONCERT

Photo Link:  www.assumptionconvent.co.za/gallery/photoalbums.aspx?Albumid=426

The Autumn Concert on Friday 25 May was a wonderful evening. The concert was opened by Simon Workman playing the bagpipes. After Flower of Scotland, Amazing Grace, and Highland Cathedral, Simon introduced the High School Choir to sing Be Thou my Vision. The choir also sang a Traditional song – arranged by our Matric pupils Nontuthuko Nyembezi and Kutlwano Mathabe – and a medley of 27 songs in 3 ½ minutes accompanied by Louis Maritz on piano and Micaela Brandao on drums. The school orchestra, led by Mrs Smythe and accompanied by Mr Loock, impressed the audience with three pieces, French Song, Quiet Evening, and Basque Dance.  The orchestra now includes violinists from the High School and the Primary School and our first ‘cello player! The Senior Primary School choir sang Africa by Toto, Here I am to Worship, and the South African favourite Mama Tembu’s Wedding – Miss Mbeya and Mr Loock have created a real sense of fun in the SP choir and it showed through in their performance! In between the school ensembles, our subject Music pupils sang (accompanied by their Voice teacher, Francois Moller) and played piano. The evening was ended by the High School choir singing Weep no more, Chilli con Carne, and Joshua. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the evening a success including all of the musicians and music teachers, the PTA, and Mr Swanepoel and his team.

RUNNING FOR CHARITY

This year, 2018, I am running my 10th Comrades Ultra Marathon on the 10th June 2018. To celebrate this, I have registered to run for charity. I have selected CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa) and joined the COWS. The COWS are the fund raising arm of the CHOC foundation. This arm started out in 2008 and since then has grown into a world renowned group of regular people that take on events such as the 94.7 Cycle race, the Iron Man, and the Comrades Marathon. Today I am proud to be one of those COWS that will help CHOC celebrate 10 years.

So, how can you help: I am looking for donations and support. By clicking on the below you will be taken to the Comrades Marathon website, where you are able to make a donation which is linked to my running profile. It will only take 3 minutes of your time but will add a lifetime to the patients, doctors, nurses and families that are affected by cancer.
You can log on to the Comrades Home page: Click on Charities Tab and then Race 4 Charity. This will take you to the runner profile page. Search for my name, view profile and then click on Make a donation. Thank you for taking the time. http://www.comrades.com/charities/race-4-charity

Quickest way: is to click on the below link. This will take you directly to my profile.  Here you will also be able to leave a message of encouragement or a note of remembrance for a loved one.
