ACADEMICS
Assumption Convent School is implementing a new commendation system in 2018. The system is designed to promote, encourage, and praise good work, and, hopefully, improve marks as pupils strive to achieve the best they can in all of their work. There are a few guidance notes below as an introduction to our new Academic Commendation system. If you would like any more information regarding the system, please do not hesitate to contact me at rstewardson@assumptionconvent.co.za, or through the school.
1. The Academic Commendation System is a separate system from the detention system and does not run as a merit/demerit system alongside the detention system. The three-slip detention system still runs as normal.
2. Teachers will award Academic Commendation points at their discretion. What to award points for, and how many points to award will be entirely up to each individual teacher. Each teacher, and each subject, will develop their own reasons for awarding points. An Academic Commendation slip will be completed by the teacher and signed by both teacher and pupil. This Academic Commendation slip will then be given to Mr Stewardson who will collate the points.

3. There are three levels of points:
a. Merit – 5 points
b. Credit – 10 points
c. Exceptional – 15 points
4. Once a pupil has reached 50 points they will be awarded an Academic Commendation Certificate to be presented by Mr Workman at assembly.
5. Academic Commendation Points could be awarded for the following reasons:
a. Work/tests for which a pupil has achieved a mark above their personal average
b. Work which has obviously been completed to a high standard
c. Work in which the pupil has obviously made a special effort to go beyond the requirements
d. An act of kindness, or other good act which goes beyond the basic requirements of the Code of Conduct
6. The Academic Commendation system is not only designed for pupils who regularly achieve 80% and higher, but is for every pupil, regardless of ability. It is an encouragement for every pupil to ‘raise their game’ and produce work and results which are better than they have achieved previously.

On the 31st of January, the two Johannesburg Junior councillors, Jade McIver and Amy Weinerlein, had the oppurtunity of visiting the Leeuwkop Prison in Pretoria, and spent a day with the prisoners. They were taken on a tour of the prison, listened to testimonies and spoke a with many of the inmates. This oppurtunity touched them deeply and left them looking at life with a new perspective.
