Presentation Festival

  • On Monday, 11 May, the grade 12s commenced the inter-school public speaking competition at home. Although only 15 speakers participated (from Holy Rosary, St Andrews and Assumption Convent) it was a delightful evening of serious, humorous and highly thought-provoking speeches. Thank you so Mr Mthombeni, Mr Swanepoel and Aunty Sue for assisting with the preparation of the venues and catering. Irene Baruga, Gabriella da Silva, Thato Molapisi and Raquel Puente attained an ‘A’ symbol; Diane Cilengi was awarded the best speaker and Ame Strydom and Savanah Brueton were awarded runner-up speakers in their respective venues. Congratulations!
  • On Tuesday, the grade 11s presented their speeches at St Andrew’s School. Skye Sheerin was awarded best speaker in her venue. Juliet Markantonatos, Francesca Lobetti, Sarah Roberts and Rachel-Leigh Audier represented Assumption Convent most admirably.
  • On Wednesday, the grade 10 speech team, presented their speeches at Reddam. Sphesihle Mtwa was the runner-up and Brittany Dennison was awarded best speaker of the venue. Although most speakers debuted and were very nervous, all achieved excellent marks. Congratulations to Kemiso Wessie, Michelle Winter, Megan Miller, Chloe Wittstock and Julia Pita Olival.

We look forward to next week’s junior evenings: Grade 9s at Holy Rosary Monday, 18 May and Grade 8s at St Benedict’s College, 19 May. Evenings begin promptly at 18h30, if you wish to support our girls. The English Department sends all junior speakers our well wishes!

Catholic Schools Sunday – 17 May 2015

Catholic Schools Sunday takes place this year on Sunday 17 May, followed by Catholic Schools Week. Catholic Schools Sunday is an excellent way for our schools to demonstrate the benefit of a faith and values based Catholic education in contemporary society. We therefore ask all pupils to wear their uniform to Mass this weekend.

The theme of Catholic Schools Week this year is “Celebrating our Founders”. As this year is dedicated to those in Consecrated Life, we will look into the journey that the Founders of Assumption Convent undertook to establish this beautiful school that we all benefit from.

High School Debating

Our two debating teams (Assumption A (1st)  and Assumption B (2nd) completed all six rounds of the SACEE debating league, with the A team winning two debates and the B team winning three out of the six. Only one debate was a prepared one, with the other five being impromptu .The teams are given one hour’s preparation on challenging topics such as war being the ‘answer’ to terrorism or deliberate spreading of HIV and attempted murder as well as arguing that the EFF is good for the country. Our teams have some beginners and two Grade Nines – who often have to face experienced matric teams. All considering, our girls can be very proud of how far they’ve come.

Unfortunately, this year we didn’t make it through to the championship round. However, we came close. Our girls acquitted themselves well and have grown as debaters.

In September, there will be inter-house debating and we encourage all of the ‘non-debaters’ to join in as well. A training workshop is planned for August as well. All are welcome to attend.

Thanks go to Mr and Mrs Abrosie, Mr and Mrs Singh, Mrs Putter, Mrs Teasdale and Coach Zyne for helping with transport.

Library News

Currently, the high school library is being upgraded. To date we have painted the main area and created a reading area in the sunniest part of the library, where the girls can come and curl up with a good book. There are chairs and couches to sink into, wonderful new books to read and warm winter sunshine to bask in. Newspaper and magazine subscriptions are also in the pipeline.

The research centre (see below) now has new blinds and computer chairs (in rainbow colours). We have also installed 2 Apple Mac laptops, four ipads and a Lenovo lap top (for those who are Apple challenged). High school girls can come and do their research in this centre in the afternoons and at breaks. Printing facilities will be introduced here in the near future. The room is also going to be redecorated further in the next few months.  Girls are encouraged to make full use of these wonderful facilities.
