English Olympiad 2014/5
The theme of the examination this year was Stories of Mzanzi. The girls received an anthology of stories by South African writers and read this over the December holidays. Starting in January, we met every week for tutorials, discussions and presentations relating to the stories. We shared Powerpoints, power debates and power eats! These discussions sometimes happened after school, and sometimes at breaks… not because the girls were passionately in love with the stories (although, I wish!) but rather because they were so very busy with multiple duties and commitments. Aliah Abrahams outdid herself, taking on the duty of summary-ninja and we thank her for her multiple presentations, all graciously shared on the server. March loomed and brought with it a very challenging and rigorous national examination.
My congratulations to everyone who participated. I know you worried about receiving the dreaded ‘participation’ citation. I’m not sure why, because to participate in THIS examination, IS an achievement too. However, this did not happen. We had an excellent set of results and you are to be heartily congratulated:

Choir Festival - Wits
Congratulations to the High School choir who were awarded a Diploma at the South African Society of Music Teachers Eisteddfod at the Linder Auditorium on Friday. The award is testament to the hard work they have put in over the last few years. The adjudicator commented on their excellent part singing especially in our a capella version of ‘Let it be’ by the Beatles.
Congratulations also to the Junior Primary choir who achieved a Gold award at the same Eisteddfod.

Career Guidance Test
Parents of matriculants and Grade 11s have probably had many discussions with their daughters about their future study options at university or college. These are important conversations to have, as these choices lead to career paths that impact one’s whole life.
At our school’s Careers Day, many top universities and tertiary institutions showcased their study options, and our pupils had the opportunity to collect brochures and information that will guide them in their career and study decision making. We also hosted an evening with professionals in a number of fields, who discussed their work experiences with pupils and parents.
Ann-Marie Stanisavljevic, who runs an online career guidance website, recommends the following points:
- Make informed choices, based on your OWN interests and not those of your friends or parents.
- Ensure that these choices will SUPPORT your future tertiary studies and career direction.
- Conduct RESEARCH on careers of interest; this is one of the best opportunities to establish if a “dream job,” is in fact everything you imagined it to be or not.
- Know what SCARCE SKILLS are required in the country. “

Annie Jr opened in the Convent Hall on Wednesday 22 July. Annie Jr was the first Primary school major production presented in association with St Benedict’s Prep and by the final curtain on Friday 24 July it was clear that the initiative was a great success. Congratulations to all the ACS girls, St Bennies boys, parents and teachers involved. Thank you to Mrs Bronwyn Gers (producer and director) to Mr Rob Stewardson and Ms Tracey Human for the commitment and time that went into making this such an enjoyable and productive learning experience for our girls and boys.

ANNIE Jr REVIEWS from our Drama Club girls:
‘Annie’ Review by Storm Sheerin and Racquel de Oliveira
Last week, Assumption Convent Primary School, in association with St Benedict’s Prep School, presented ‘Annie Jr’, the musical. It was at times stressful and tiring, but in the end it was all worth it and we all had a jolly good time! AS the audience was seated on the first night and the curtains opened, and they saw the cast, they said, “I think I’m gonna like it here!” The first night was great and at the end we said, “Maybe it will be even better Tomorrow!” At the end the girls and boys became so close that we didn’t feel like orphans after all!
‘Annie’ Review by Nokutenda, Betsaleel and Grace M
Over 90 Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 pupils from Assumption Convent School and St Benedict’s were involved in the ‘Annie’ major production. The show was performed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It got better and better each evening. Although it rained cats and dogs, Friday’s performance was exquisite! The cast and crew had the best time ever. Thank you to everyone for participating.
‘Annie’ Review by Dimitra Habiba and Ayanda Phakati
Picture it...94 excited children, make-up, costumes, wigs, long nights, scripts and each other, ready to perform. St Benedict’s Prep and Assumption Convent Primary put ‘Annie Jr’ together in three months. Boys and girls? At first it did not seem right, but we grew as a family. Long nights, learning scripts and songs, the catering crew providing us with divine food, getting costumes ready! We had an awesome three days presenting ‘Annie’ and hope that we can do another production again soon.
‘Annie’ Review by some of our Grade 7 girls
‘Annie’ was a lovely play. It was great to meet some St Benedict’s boys. We made friends but also made memories. We wish this wasn’t our last major production and feel that the primary school should put on a production at least every second year.
‘Annie’ Review by Catarina Regal, Raquel Nogueira and Gina Gomes
We think the boys were great, but the girls were amazing. The teachers were exceptional. They helped us so much and that is why we did so well. We enjoyed every second. Thank you to everyone who participated. We can’t wait to do more productions!
Thoughts on ‘Annie’
Breanne (Grace Farrell): It was stressful, but the hard work paid off. ‘Annie’ was super and very well done. The fire at our last rehearsal was scary, because Mr Swanepoel came out coughing. The rest was exciting and so much fun. I loved making new friends.
Nadia (Kate): I thought that ‘Annie’ was awesome and I was very happy to be a lead orphan. It was also cool to make good and forever-lasting friends. I can’t wait to do another play!
Nicole (NYC): It was so much fun meeting new people and making new friends. It was tiring to come from 5 to 7 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but I loved it all. Well done to everyone!
Monika (Crew): It was fun and so cool. I wish I had auditioned for ‘Annie’. I will definitely audition next time, as I love acting and performing!

The Silver Monitor Badge, awarded as part of the Grade 7 Leadership Programme, recognises the girls’ commitment to working towards achieving their personal best in as many aspects of school life as possible. The Leadership Programme aims to build leaders on all levels and the girls develop their personal leadership skills by setting personal goals in Academics and in Sports and Cultural activities. They also commit themselves to a number of school duties and actively support the schools outreach projects.

High School Sport
Soccer

This past weekend our team braved the icy weather to take on the JVW Girls Football Tournament at Reddam House. We played a total of 4 matches on the first day of group stages and left undefeated and without having conceded any goals with the results being as follows:
- Assumption 4-0 Kings School
- Assumption 2-0 Krugersdorp High
- Assumption 3-0 Reddam Waterfall
- Assumption 3-0 Marist Brothers
These results got us to the Quarter Finals on Sunday the 26th where we played Mondeor High and won 1-0 , sending us to the semi-finals against Edenvale High. Our girls played with tenacity, heart and strength but a free kick just before full-time of the semi-final brought the score to 1-0 and meant we would have to play for 3rd or 4th place. It was a heartbreaking experience for the team but we picked ourselves up and went on to win our last match of the tournament against Norkem Park 3-2, placing us 3rd overall and earning us Bronze Medals.
These two days of intense football were coupled with the privilege of meeting Banyana Banyana players, bonding with team mates, interviews by SABC sport and finally being awarded our medals by Janine van Wyk herself.
I couldn't be prouder of my team! It was an unforgettable tournament! A huge thank you to our coach, coach Angie who we couldn't have done this without!
We would also like to thank Mr Workman,Mr Lydall, all parents and all pupils who were there to support us; it was greatly appreciated!

Congratulations to:
Nadia De Jesus attained a distinction in her Royal Academy of Dance, Advanced 1 Level ballet exam. Melissa De Jesus attained a distinction in her Royal Academy of Dance, Intermediate Level ballet exam. RAD exams are recognised by the national qualifications regulators of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland,
Students studying the vocational syllabus are expected to achieve a high level of technical and artistic ability in ballet and it takes a great deal of time and commitment to reach the standard required to pass these examinations. The examiners come to South Africa from the United Kingdom to adjudicate and compare the student dancers to the rest of the world. This is a great achievement as it is extremely difficult to get a distinction in the Major Levels.
