BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH - INTERNATIONAL FOOD & DANCE FESTIVAL

HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION

St Teresa of Avila

This Saturday, 15 October, the church celebrates St Teresa of Avila, a dynamic female saint and doctor of the church.

Her life story is not what one typically expects from a saint and especially a reformer of the church. When she was young, she was mischievous and dramatic and most people would not have picked her for future canonization. Her story is inspiring, it gives us hope that if she could become a great saint there is hope for all of us.

She was born in Avila, Spain, to a pious family. Her mother died when she was 11 years old, and she was heartbroken, but this led to her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary as her spiritual mother. Her teenage years came with the usual rebellion; when she was 16 years old, her father decided that she was out of control and that it would be best to send her to an Augustinian convent to be educated.

At first, Teresa hated the convent but she grew closer to God and she decided to enter the Carmelite convent. It was in this context that she would begin a great reform to restore austerity and discipline in the convent. At first, she met with some resistance but she persevered and her new convent earned general approval.

St Teresa leaves behind an extraordinary legacy and she was canonized (declared a saint) only 40 years after her death. Her work inspired the greater reformation in the Catholic Church following the founding of Lutheranism.

She is an amazing role model for us today who shows us that reform starts from within, and it will never happen unless good people speak up and take a stand.

May St Teresa of Avila pray for us.

Grade 9 Art Work

The grade 9s learnt about Keith Haring this term. Keith was an American artist who addressed social issues in his artwork. The girls project included researching and creating their own poster in Haring’s art style, focusing on a South African social issue that they feel strongly about. The issues ranged from load shedding, corruption, bribery, gender based violence, malnutrition, animal abuse, xenophobia, water crisis, unemployment, drug abuse, xenophobia, equal rights, and poor education system. The girls engaged in critical thinking and were challenged to see how others view these issues.

Humour

“Does God have a sense of humour?”

This was the question one of the girls asked me during discussion time on our Grade 3 retreat. Before I could even answer her, another girl piped up, “Of course He does, He made my brother!” After a really good laugh, we continued talking about God, and how each and every one of us are in a relationship with Him. Listening to the girls, it reminded me of the great privilege we as parents and teachers have in being such an integral part of their young lives.

These formative years present huge learning curves and provide multiple experiences in which our children develop skills that stay with them into adulthood. Engaging in positive activities, equipping them to make healthy choices, teaching them how to handle conflict situations, improving their relationship skills and nurturing them to become confident members of society – these are all experiences that we give to our children every day. It is not always easy to do. There are times when a bad mood clouds judgement, when irritation and stress just become too much, when being a parent, care giver or teacher feels tiring, and doing or saying the right thing doesn’t happen with ease. Being a parent, care giver or teacher often requires perseverance. It takes time to ‘grow’ a child, time to build character that lasts a lifetime. Children learn little by little, day by day, through success and failure, and through watching the adults in their lives. Dr. Louise Hart, a community psychologist and author of many parenting books, once wrote, “If we don’t shape our kids, they will be shaped by outside forces that don’t care what shape our kids are in.”

Children learn by watching, they model what they see. Being patient with the teller when paying and there is a problem, teaches them kindness. Collecting food for the needy shows them to love others. Calmly interceding in a conflict situation between frustrated siblings teaches them to resolve conflict. It is an ongoing lesson. But what a blessing! Our goals as parents, care givers and teachers are not complicated, but we face many challenges in meeting the goals. We all want the very best for our children, but in an ever changing, at times unstable world, this sometimes does not coincide with moral belief and our relationship with God.

Teach and model for them what love entails. (I Corinthians 13)

Prayer for our Children

Thank-you for our children, Lord. They are a gift from You. Give us strength and wisdom daily, give us patience and a joyful heart. Let us be examples of Your love for everyone, and Your forgiveness. Amen

Grade 7 Creative Arts: Joan Miró Doodles

“I try to apply colours like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.” – Joan Miró
The Grade 7s created unique doodles in the style of Joan Miró. He was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona who combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy. Joan Miro believed that doodling helped to free the mind.

Mrs Swanepoel

Thank You
