WALK FOR KATIA

MESSAGE FROM HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
“Together we can do so much more.”
Dear Parents
We are now well into our final Term of 2022, and it is so gratifying to see our special school so busy and so “Fully Alive”.
Our students have participated in a number of exciting and challenging sport fixtures, cultural activities, and school excursions.
Our tennis teams have moved up a league from last year and remain very competitive, our swimmers are participating in a variety of prestigious events, and our chess team recently hosted an inter-high chess tournament, the first that was not on-line in more than two years! Yesterday We participated in an inter-school athletics, and we will be participating in the inter-Catholic athletics meet today and a few more athletics meetings in the weeks to come. Next week we will be hosting a number of eisteddfods, and our girls will be well represented in a wide range of entries. Our choirs and marimba bands will also be participating. Our primary school artists did exceptionally well in the St Benedict’s Art Eisteddfod and four of our learners have been invited to their prize-giving next week as they have made it into the top ten. Our rowers look forward to the new season with great anticipation after their success at the ergo regatta held at St Andrews last weekend.
On 13 October, our matrics will be attending their very last school function, the Valedictory before officially completing their final year of school and commencing their matric examinations. The cohort of 2022 are diligent and very able. They have prepared well and we anticipate pleasing results.
Despite the very challenging economic climate, Assumption Convent continues to look forward and plan for its future. We cannot stand still, and must be open to innovation and renewal. During 2022, we opened our new Learn to Swim facility, which has the ability to operate twelve months a year, and our new studios dedicated to ballet and our marimbas. We are excited about our primary and high school robotics centre, which is currently under construction, and will be housed in the old estate manager’s house. We plan to have this up and running for the beginning of 2023.
Our Learn to Swim swimming pool.

Our New Battement Studio

We are proud of the energy, enthusiasm and excellence that we witness daily. Assumption Convent continues to provide a wonderful, caring education that is world-class, and which prepares our girls superbly for what lies ahead in their tertiary studies and future careers.
Please help us let others know about our remarkable school – word of mouth is the greatest tool we have to promote our school. Please inform family and friends who may be looking for a school for their children for next year, about our Primary School Open Day on Saturday October 29, from 9am to 11am.
Thank you

HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION
Creations

We’re in the Season of Creation and in the Grade 8 Religious Education lessons we explored this topic by reading the story of Creation from Genesis. The girls went around in the school to encounter God’s creation and to take pictures of what they consider a beautiful part of creation. Here are their reflections and pictures:
“I chose a flower because I think it is very pretty and it is very colourful which brightens someone’s day.”
“I chose the tree because it’s calming when it blows in the wind”
“I took a picture of my friends because they are beautiful creations. I chose them because they are there during tough times and make me smile during tough times. “
“I took a picture of a tree because God create trees for us to breathe and it gives us shade to not die of heat.”
“I chose the flower because it is really pretty and it just blooms and really pretty to see and it lightens up days.”
“I choose the sun, because the sun will always be there even on the gloomiest days 🌞”
“I chose a picture of this plant because it’s what we have in memory of Katia”
I chose a picture of a flower because it is so bright and stands out against the shadows
“I took this photo because I like how I captured the sun streaming through with the tree symbolising how sun gives life to all plants”
“I chose this piece of nature because it reminds me of the beautiful spring morning when I’ve just woke up and see the beautiful sunrise.”
“I chose these flowers because of their vibrant colour”

We wish all the Jewish faithful a very happy Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), and all Hindu devotees every blessing for Navaratri.

Catholic Schools Chess
Assumption Convent School hosted the 10th Annual Catholic Schools Chess Tournament on Saturday 17 September. We welcomed 12 other Catholic schools to a morning of competitive chess played over 5 rounds on a 15/15 time control. The hall was packed with 108 players of mixed ability, all here to enjoy the strategizing beauty, and competitive mind-sport of chess.
Owing to Covid-19, the previous two years’ tournaments took place online. But this year, there was a lot of joy and excitement to be playing over the board, in person again. Assumption’s team consisted of a mix of seasoned players, and newcomers to the game. Each of the participating schools brough boards, pieces and equipment so that we would have enough to accommodate 54 matches per round. In all 270 matches were played.
Although our team ended quite a way down the final list, our girls gave a very good account of themselves and represented Assumption with skill and determination. Our team consisted of Chloe Quan (captain), Nina Pantovic, Oluchi Jones, Emma Lauf, Lara Kruger, Gabriella Whitfield, Taela Hewson, Keziah Singh, Allyssa Denness, Daniella Whitfield and Riley Moller. Regular player Haleigh Knipe was unable to attend.
Our brother school, St Benedict’s won the team contest. Alexia De Abreu of De La Salle Holy Cross ended joint first and won the top girl prize. Fazel-Ellahi Zayd of Sacred Heart and Charlton Chung of St Benedict’s ended joint first together with Alexia, and played a sudden death 3/3 Blitz game which Charlton won (on time) to determine the boys’ section victor. Assumption Convent’s Emma Lauf achieved 3 wins, ending 6th in the girls’ section, while Chloe Quan, Lara Kruger, Keziah Singh, Taela Hewson, Allyssa Denness, and Gabriella Whitfield all achieved 2 wins each. All other players battled valiantly while picking up satisfying wins and the occasional draw.
Team Results as follows:
1. St Benedict’s 17
2. Sacred Heart 16
3. De La Salle Holy Cross 14,5

Challenges
On Monday my oldest son passed his driver’s license, during stage 6 loadshedding. He had to negotiate his way through the streets of Edenvale without one robot working, and deal with irate drivers frustrated with all the problems of Eskom! But he did it. Before I left for work, I wished him the best of luck, told him I would light a candle for him, and we said a little prayer. I asked him if he was nervous because of loadshedding which just made everything more difficult, to which he cheekily replied with a grin, “Nah, I love a challenge! Besides, I am lucky that it’s not raining!” I was impressed that he was up for the challenge, but it was also good to hear that he was focusing on the positive - it wasn’t raining - and not dwelling on the negative, loadshedding. There is a quote that says happy people focus on what they have, unhappy people focus on what is missing. Our minds respond to the pain of sometimes not having something, of missing out and being left behind. We all want the satisfaction of achievement versus failure, and it can be very hard to find the positive in a situation when despair, frustration, or unhappiness overshadow everything.

To take it a step further, this is why teaching our children resilience is so important. The ability to find the positive things in life even when difficulties seem overwhelming is an excellent life skill. Parents and teachers can build resilience when they push, gently, young people to the edges of their comfort zones, be it intellectual, social, emotional, physical, or spiritual. Supporting and encouraging our children when they take risks, when they succeed or fail, when they face obstacles and difficulties teaches them to bounce back from the ups and downs of life. There are many readings in the Bible that urge us to press on and to overcome hardship and temptation, and to persevere in the face of trials. Proverbs 24:16 raises the theme of resilience, “Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.”

It is so difficult to navigate through all the struggles we have in this country. Loadshedding and the threat of a national blackout is very worrying, there are financial woes of an economy that is not moving forward, our youth face desperate unemployment numbers, violence and crime…the list could go on. These are the times when instead of looking at what is broken or missing in our lives, we should be focusing on all the blessings we have. It is not always easy to do, believe me, when your power has been off for over six hours, your fridge is defrosting, and your electric gate has died a sad and silent death in the face of no power! “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”2 Corinthians 4:8-9. The key to resilience is our faith in the Lord. When a situation seems out of control or seems overwhelming, give it to God. Hand it over to Him, He knows the direction we need to be heading in. Take a good look at the good things in your life, your child’s beautiful smile, an encouraging note from a work colleague, the smell of a delicious South African braai, the joy of celebrating our diverse nation with all its rich and wonderful cultures. Jodi Picoult, American author once wrote, “The human capacity for burden is like bamboo-far more flexible than you’d ever believe at first glance.” The positives are there, we just have to look for them.
Prayer for Resilience
Merciful Lord, I’m weary, so I’ve come to you now to ask for your help. I’ve been knocked down before, and this time it feels like I won’t be able to get back up. So, Father, I’m in great need of your help. When I’m weak and tired, please be my strength. Amen

Physical Education and Afternoon Sports
Please ensure that your daughters pack sunblock, school caps, water bottles and extra lunch for the days they have PE and afternoon sports. It is important for the girls to stay hydrated as it is getting hotter. I have also found that girls are struggling due to not eating correctly. Your daughters are growing and participating in physical activities; therefore, they need to fuel their bodies correctly.
