MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
A Tale of Courage

Presentation by Mr Rodney Young
At our high school assembly this week, we were privileged to welcome one of our parents, Mr Rodney Young to address our pupils and staff.
In June 2021, Mr Young contracted Covid-19 and battled to breath. He was booked into Milpark Hospital, and collapsed on arrival. He only regained consciousness 4 months later in September of that year. During this time, Mr Young was moved to ICU and placed on three life support machines. On 2 occasions, his heart stopped beating, and he had to be revived. Between June and September, Mr Young contracted every superbug known to the doctors and his body was overcome with septicaemia. These infections damaged his heart, lungs and kidneys. Mr Young’s limbs became gangrenous, due to lack of circulation, causing his right leg to be amputated below the knee, all his toes on his left foot being removed and two fingers on his left hand being shortened. His family were called in on no less than four occasions, to say goodbye.
After slowly coming off the life-support machines, Mr Young was left with very little movement, and literally had to relearn how to do everything we all take for granted. With the help of intensive therapy, Mr Young gradually relearned how to sit, how to stand, how to walk and even how to eat.
Today, Mr Young has been back at work for several months, and is again leading a full and active life. He is doing everything he used to do before he contracted Covid, including riding his motorbike and bicycle.
Mr Young’s message was simple but profound:
- “Never give up”
- “You are never alone. God never abandons you. Miracles do happen with the power pray.”
- “Humans are social beings; we need each other.”
- “Don’t be scared to ask for help.”
- “Give without expecting any reward.”
Mr Young’s courage and indomitable spirit is a wonderful example for all us. He never gave up; neither did his family, his friends or his church.

We pray for small and medium sized businesses; in the midst of economic and social crisis, may they find ways to continue operating, and serving their communities.
Prayers at First break
This week, the high school gathered to pray together at the beginning of first break. The Marian prayers were a spiritual preparation for our school feast day, and were led by the Confirmation candidates of this year.
Dear Mother Gertrude…
In preparation for celebrating Assumption Feast Day the Grade 9s have been learning about the History of the Missionary Sisters of the Assumption and especially Mother Gertrude. They took time to write letters to the foundress of the Assumption Sisters in South Africa, here are excerpts from some of the letters:
“Dear Mother Gertrude, my best friend and I commend you for your bravery, hard work and dedication towards sharing the Word of the Lord in our homeland. Your gift is much appreciated.”
“Dear Mother Gertrude, …thank you for starting Assumption schools… your kindness has inspired the sisters today…”
"Dear Mother Gertrude, you and your sisters cared and helped many people including people that the government did not care for. Your staying has led to the creation of hope in this country.”
“Dear Mother Gertrude, …you made a lot of sacrifices to give us so many opportunities for our future. Learning about your history has inspired us to do good and kind things…”
“Dear Mother Gertrude, …thank you for being a generous soul and beautiful spirit, though you faced a lot of challenges we appreciate everything you did that resulted in our school having a family-oriented, free-willed, loving and compassionate space.”
“Dear Mother Gertrude, we enjoyed learning about your story, we now know that success isn’t easy and you should never give up, even if it’s tough.”

Assumption Day Mass

Today we celebrate the Assumption. Mass was celebrated by Fr Andrew, concelebrating was Fr Zukisani in Blessed Sacrament church. The Mass was beautifully animated by our worship band and it was so beautiful to have the whole school in the church once again. In his homily Fr Andrew called us "The Blue Army" an army of blue for Our Lady's honour.
Our honour.

WINTERFEST 2022

On Saturday we saw the return of a highlight in our school calendar, the much anticipated WinterFest Fun Day. The girls and parents thoroughly enjoyed the many exciting activities and stalls on offer. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many people who were involved in making this such a successful day. Seeing the smiles and happy faces all around was welcome after two years of mask wearing. The funds raised will be used to better the educational facilities of our beautiful school and will enhance your daughter’s school experience.
Big congratulations to the entire team that was in involved in making fun day happen. Without this team we would not have been able to put together such a great event! The organising committee is just the tip of the iceberg. A big shout out needs to go to:
All the teachers and admin staff that were there on the day working and assisting to make the day a success!
Dawie and his team for all they do in preparation, during the event and then afterwards once most of us are already on our way back home to get some rest!
The school management team for their support!
All the students and parents that give their time on the day to assist!

Excursions
Grade 8 and 9

Today was both educational and fun. It's not often one can go to places like Gold Reef with their entire grade. The grade 8’s and 9’s went together.
I enjoyed going underground to the mine as well as watching the short movie about what Gold Reef City is based on. It was interesting seeing gold being poured right in front of us and imagining what it was like to be a miner in the past.
The different intensity and variations of rides made it so that there was a ride for everyone. I went on quite a few rides that I didn’t think I would ever go on , it definitely helped having a friend to go on the rides with.
It was a good idea for each girl to have a buddy to go around the park with instead of being by themselves. It was also nice to be able to buy food and drinks in the park as well as playing the games for prizes.

The Lady
“If you ever feel distressed during your day, call upon our Lady. Just say this simple prayer ‘Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.’I must admit: This prayer has never failed me. “ Saint Mother Teresa
On Friday we are blessed to be celebrating the Assumption of our Lady into Heaven ( which takes place on the 15th August during our holidays), and to be celebrating our beautiful school. Catholics and Christians celebrate this feast of the Assumption, which recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of our Lord Jesus from earth, when both her body and soul were taken into the presence of God. Mary was very special to God because she said ýes’to becoming the mother of Jesus. But the Lord also shows us all that one day we will all share in the resuurection of Jesus.

Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
Father in Heaven, all creation rightly gives You praise, for all life and holiness comes from You.
In the plan of Your wisdom she who bore Christ in her womb was raise body and soul in glory to be with Him in Heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting Your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Over the past five weeks, the girls explored Anime, Manga & Cartoons. They created their own unique art pieces in the style of their favourite genre and had to include their interpretation of an explosion. From music notes, bubbles, fireworks, bursts of colour, and choc chip cookies they enjoyed this interesting theme.
