FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S DESK

WELCOME BACK TO TERM TWO

This term has begun at a gallop.  We are scarcely back and we have already had the privilege of enjoying some superb house plays, some great inter-school public speaking and a feast of netball, soccer and hockey. Next week our marimba bands will be performing at a musical evening at St Andrews. And of course, we   diligently prepare for our upcoming mid-year examinations.   It is wonderful to see our special school once again ‘fully alive.”

We are now well into the 5th waive of Covid-19, and we must not drop our guard and become complacent.   Here at Assumption Convent School,   we continue to implement sensible protocols that are proven to provide a safe teaching and learning environment.  Our special appeal is to those within our community, 12 years and older  who have still not been vaccinated, to do so as soon as soon as possible.   According to information recently released by the health minister, Mr Joe Phaahla, as at the end of last week there were 240 Covid patients in intensive care in South African hospitals.  Of these 237 were unvaccinated.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those currently recovering from Covid-19, and we wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

Yours sincerely

N Workman

POPE’S INTENTIONS FOR MAY 2022

Faith-Filled Young People

We pray for all young people, called to live life to the fullest; may they see in Mary’s life the way to listen, the depth of discernment, the courage that faith generates, and the dedication to service.

Mary, Our Lady of Fatima

On the 13th of May, the universal church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. This marks the anniversary of the day Our Lady first appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. The children: Lucia dos Santos (aged 9) and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto (aged 8 and 6, respectively); were tending sheep when they had a vision of a woman who was surrounded by light and identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. She exhorted them to pray the rosary for world peace.
She appeared to them six times and gave them three “secrets” and promised a miracle that happened on the 13th of October and was witnessed by about 70 000 people. Initially, the authenticity of the visions was questioned but the Vatican accepted them as appearances of the Virgin Mary. Fatima is now one of the greatest Marian shrines in the world.

In this month of May when we especially celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary, let us ask our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima to pray for the needs of our world.

INTERACT - KZN WATER DRIVE

Water is said to be one of the earth's most essential resources and rightly so, it is the soul of our life. The desperate need by the people of KwaZulu-Natal after the floods for water trigged a need for Assumption Convent School to get involved and make a difference in our unique, caring way that we are known for. The rally to collect water via our Assumption community in two weeks manifested into 1045 litres of water being collected to be distributed to KZN. Our girls, together with our School Principal, Mr Neville Workman assisted by loading the collected water onto the truck ready for distribution to KZN.

The humbleness of our school community shows that despite tough economic challenges in our homes, when there is a plea to help others, our teachers, parents, pupils and our community stand together and live by the motto of being “Fully Alive”. We would also like to thank our Assumption family and community for generously donating a cash donation of R6800 which will be given to the Gift of the Givers to aid in the restoration of KZN. A special thank you also goes out to Lee-Sandra Moonsamy from KNH Freight who always goes the extra mile to make a difference in helping Assumption Convent’s Interact Team with their deliveries.

"Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others" Danny Thomas

INTERACT NEWS

The Interact Club will be collecting empty containers, ice cream, yogurt containers, margarine containers preferably with a lid for the Church for their weekly soup drive.
Please send containers to Mrs Heeralall class Room 16, if you have any or you can drop off with any Interact member.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

DRAMA - ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL

Photo's by Haleigh Knipe

On Friday evening, Assumption Convent held their One Act Play Festival.

The Grade 11 Drama students directed 3 exciting plays this year, with cast members from Grade 9 to Grade 12. The girls worked hard and engaged thoroughly in the creative process. The final results were three excellent one act plays. Our esteemed adjudicators were impressed at the standard of work produced and had encouraging and positive feedback for the students.

We commend all the students involved in the outstanding work presented on Friday evening.

We congratulate the directors, cast and crew of” The Most Massive Woman Wins” for winning the One Act Play Festival.
Well done on this wonderful achievement. You can be very proud of your outstanding work.

PUBLISHED POEM BY SR KGOMOTSO

Little Boxes by Kgomotso Moloto (published 2022)

You try to define me with words placed next to little boxes
say, “Pick the ones that describe you by making little crosses.”
You try to cast me in moulds that existed before we were conceived,
Definitions that are seldom questioned, just always believed.

Ancient traditions are being wielded in this modern life
as weapons to discriminate against those of different birth;
Pride in one’s history is being excused and misused
to oppress those who don’t fit in or share the same views.

We who don’t have clear-cut backgrounds and norms
are called ‘lost’ and ‘uncultured’ because we don’t conform.
They can’t categorise or make sense of our lives,
can’t understand how we were painted outside the lines.
I’m not only a, b or c, I’m all the above and more,
my identity can’t be summed up by your distorted scores,
the squares can’t contain my outside-the-box nature,
I can’t be explained by simple questions on a piece of paper.

I’ll run circles around your neat little rows of boxes
and I refuse the limited options that make us bear crosses.
As far as tradition goes, I’ll continue to be undefined.
I don’t hate your beliefs – so, please stop trampling on mine

InnovateEdu Conference 2022

Mrs Kench and I had the opportunity to attend the InnovateEdu Conference last week at Parklands College in Cape Town. There was a strong focus on creating engaging, equitable and meaningful lessons for all pupils. We were inspired by the new innovation hub building and how the physical space was used to facilitate deeper learning experiences. Best practice regarding STEM and computational thinking pedagogies were always kept front of mind as we were introduced to a myriad of tools and technologies that could be used to provide opportunities for authentic learning. Our teachers are excited to explore some of the new tools and ideas.

2022 INTER-SCHOOL/ PRESENTATION FESTIVAL

Assumption Convent School, Holy Rosary School, St Andrew’s School, and Sacred Heart College feel that it is important to give our learners an opportunity to experience speaking in authentic contexts. KIRSTEN BELOVAY

I joined Assumption Convent in 2007 and matriculated in 2011. After I matriculated, I studied at the University of Johannesburg where I received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Informatics.  I currently work as an Integration Developer at DeARX Services in Randburg.
When I attended the open day at Assumption in 2006, the atmosphere was so welcoming and I felt that this was where I wanted to complete my schooling.  It was my participation in the external IT course offered by Assumption that sparked my interest in Computer Programming and resulted in my choice of career, which I find both challenging and very rewarding.

KYLA OWUSU (neé Mynheer)

I started at Assumption Convent in Grade 8 in 2009 and matriculated in 2013
In 2018 I obtained my BEng in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pretoria. At the end of 2021 I completed my BEngHons in Electrical Engineering, again from UP.
I have been working full-time at Sasol since I obtained my undergraduate degree, and have since successfully completed their Graduate Development Programme. I am currently permanently employed at Sasol, servicing their Sasolburg Operations as a Technical Support Electrical Engineer.

Assumption has played a massive role in my success.
First of all, I will be ever-grateful for the teachers who always assisted me with achieving my academic goals and encouraging me to strive for more. Unlocking my capabilities without over-pressuring my teenage self, and always providing additional support if I asked for it.
The array of extra-murals allowed me to be exposed to so many experiences. I tried everything from the marimba band and drama, to sports such as soccer, basketball and swimming. I joined the choir, attended extra-curricular spiritual activities that made my heart burst with love and gratitude and even served on the catering team. For those of us who weren't the greatest at athletics, we had the privilege to cheerlead for our sisters. ACS even uplifted my dancing career that I built outside of school. We did outreach, we did science expo and Olympiads, we did sport, there was public speaking and debating, music, art and drama on offer. We were given the opportunity to try it all and find our niche, or do it all and learn to juggle and time-manage in ways that would seriously prepare us for adulthood.
With the smaller school environment you were never just a number, and through the nurturing and support I learnt self-worth. I now carry that self-worth I learnt with me every day. Above all, that is something I am ever-grateful to ACS for.

I made the most amazing friends at school, and I would like to add that we are still very much involved in each other’s lives. My closest circle of girls are all ACS alumni. One an incredible doctor who gives so much of herself to help others in need. One an exceptional career-women striving to represent females in the male-dominated world of mining law. And another travelling the world and making big moves in the marketing industry overseas.

We are all so different, yet our ACS core makes itself known. Having a part of that school with me in the presence of my friends is beautiful. A support that is unmatched.

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to school. I hope that all our families enjoyed a peaceful Easter break. We have a very busy term ahead starting with a jam-packed netball season. We have entered the Girls’ School Netball League. Our first league match was held on Thursday with our Grade 3 girls playing at St Andrew’s School. Grade 4 – 7 will play today (Friday), and the Grade 6 and 7 girls travel to Holy Rosary School. There are two netball festivals this weekend. The Gr 3 – 4 netball teams will be playing in a festival at Holy Rosary on Saturday, and the Gr 7 girls will be playing at St Andrew’s School on Saturday.

Hockey season starts in June. Fixtures will be shared as soon as they are finalized.

Choir and Marimba are also in full swing.  The marimba girls have moved to their new practice venue in the house opposite the Music Room. The Marimba Band will be participating in the Marimba Festival at St Andrew’s School on Tuesday 17th May at 18h00.

We have two choir evenings coming up -  Tuesday, 24th and Wednesday, 25th May. We are looking forward to hosting Holy Rosary and St Benedict’s choirs on Tuesday 24th , and Dunvegan Primary and St Martin’s Primary school choirs on Wednesday 25th. Please join us in welcoming these choirs to our school. Our PTA will be selling their famous prego rolls on both evenings.

Mrs. Swanepoel has been working very hard with her Eisteddfod girls, and we have a number of our girls participating at various Eisteddfods this term. Our first Eisteddfod is on Saturday, 14 May at Crawford prep Sandton. We wish our girls good luck and will publish the results as soon as we receive them.
The ballet girls have also acquired a lovely new venue in the house opposite the Music Room. I am sure the girls will appreciate and enjoy their new purpose-built venue.

Elevate will be hosting workshops at the senior primary school on Wednesday, 18th May. The Grade 5 and Grade 6 classes will be doing ‘Ace your Exams’ in preparation for their June exams and Grade 4 will do a ‘Kickstart Study Skills’ workshop.  Gr 7s will be doing ‘Study Skills: Note-Taking’. If you would like to know more about Elevate, please register and join their free parent webinars. The final webinar is on 18th May at 18h00.

Winter has arrived and flu season is also back this year. If your daughter is not feeling well, please keep her at home until she feels better. Covid numbers are rising, our Covid protocols are still firmly in place at school and, although masks may be removed when the girls are outside, once they enter an indoor space mask must be worn at all times. If a family member tests positive and your daughter does not have any symptoms she may come to school. However, if she does show symptoms, please have her tested and keep her at home. Please inform the school if your daughter tests positive.
I am looking forward to all our events this term and ask that all parents to encourage their daughters to participate in our extra-mural programme and support their daughters whenever possible.
We wish all our families a safe and relaxing weekend.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

Welcome back to school. The second term is always a challenging one with dark mornings and cold weather and will be even more of a challenge this year with the ever-looming worry about our electricity crisis, a possible 5th wave of Covid, and our struggling economy. It may only be the second week of the school term, but our girls are already carrying these concerns into the classroom and onto the playground. Speaking about their worries, their behaviour towards their peers, and empathy to others in our lessons, there has been a general pattern in most of the grades, with some girls openly speaking about how stressed their parents are now. “My dad is always working; we never see him and when we do, he is such a grouch! My mom is always shouting at me to hurry up, mom and dad fight all the time because they are so stressed.” As a mom I know how difficult things these days are and raising children in these times is not for sissies!

I remember a lovely proverb from the Bible. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” In our hectic lives of go, go, go all the time, we often speak without thinking things through, our sharp words can at times be cruel and thoughtless. Our tongues so quickly can become an instrument of harshness instead of one of encouragement and right teaching.  I distinctly remember an afternoon when I fetched my younger son from school. It had been a long day, and I was tired and thinking about a million things like what to cook for supper, then remembering I had forgotten to defrost the chicken. I still had to fetch my other son from sport, get to the shops to get cardboard for a History project which he had only informed me about the same morning and I had a deadline for work. All mom thoughts! Driving home through the heavy traffic, my younger son quietly told me that he had not done well in his Afrikaans test, and I immediately started moaning at him, “Did you study hard enough? You spent too much time on the basketball court, time to up your game.” And then I saw his face, he looked so hurt and angry, and he immediately went into defense mode. I instantly felt regret and disappointment in myself. It was one of those bad mom alert moments where the guilt will follow you for the rest of your life. Not a soft answer at all.

Often when an angry parent demands that their child does something, or berates their child for not achieving, the response is usually one of reluctant compliance or angry defense. Our responses in our everyday lives are what builds character traits in our children. As we start this new term, we all have an ideal time to begin afresh with our soft answers to one another. Answers of understanding and encouragement, instead of tongue lashings. This is not easy to always do, and this is why when walk with our Lord, and learn from Him through prayer, reading the Scriptures, going to our different religious gatherings and Churches, we can empathize more with each other, be it our children, our siblings, co-workers, partners and even strangers. Harsh words, critical tone of voice, impatience, sarcasm, gossip, complaining and yelling, these are all the ways we hurt each other with our words. As we begin this new term, we can try to be more mindful of the words we speak. There is another beautiful Proverb from the Bible which says, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

To all our Assumption moms, grandmothers, aunts, and care givers, our prayers were with you on Mother’s Day.

“A Mother is one
who can take the place of all others
but whose place no one else can take.”
~ Wise Old Irish Words

Prayer for All Mothers.

Heavenly Father, we bring all mothers to You and thank them for their guidance, patience, and love. We ask You to bless them with Your own Special love, today and always.  Mother Mary, please pray for all our mothers. Amen

On a much sadder note, with the tragic loss of little Kamso, our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time, and with his friends, and the caring staff at Baby Steps.

Loving Father, You are close to the broken-hearted and save those who are crushed in spirit. You are not only with us in broken-hearted seasons, but You heal our broken hearts. We come to You today, grief-stricken, and sad. Our prayer today is that You are embracing little Kamso, who has soulfully left this earth to come home to You. Give us the peace, clarity, and understanding we need to stand up and walk through our day. Our prayers are for Kamso’s family, please hold them close to You Lord. Amen

Mrs Bondonno

PRIMARY SCHOOL

GRADE 4-7 ART CLUB

The girls studied the works of the Belgian surrealist artist, René Magritte. He was well known for creating a number of witty and thought-provoking images. Inspired by Son of Man (1964), The False Mirror (1928), La Décalcomanie (1966), and La Grande Famille the girls created their own surrealist artwork focusing on positive and negative space.

MINI COUNCIL

On Thursday 5th May, we went to our formal induction ceremony. We were seated with our co-councilors and went on stage to receive badges that represent our council. CHOC gave us a thank you speech for all the support we gave them this year. From each committee chairpersons and secretaries were chosen. Ashleigh Knipe had the privilege of being chosen as Deputy Chairperson of the Welfare Committee. Next, our top 4 managers of the council were chosen. Our 2022 Mini Mayor is Erin Napier from Crawford Sandton. From King David Victory Park, Safriel Ndzingani was chosen as the Deputy Mini Mayor and Maya Roth as the Chief Whip. Lucy Blades from Auckland Park Preparatory was chosen as our Council-Manager. We congratulated everyone after the ceremony ended and we are looking forward to the exciting year ahead.
Last week Saturday we met at St Andrew's School for Girls. We learnt the basics of book writing from Jan Weeratunga. We separated into groups and started writing our own stories. Before the meeting, we designed thank you cards for nurses in celebration of nurses' day. We had lots of fun and can’t wait for our books to be published.
As soon as possible we ask that Grade 1-7 start collecting books. They can be old or new books as long as they are in good condition, and you are willing to donate them. The book's ages range from baby to 18 years old. These books will be going to the “No More Victims” home for all the kids there. Collection ends on 10 June 2022.

Thank you

BABY STEPS 2 ASSUMPTION

Baby Steps 2 Assumption Newsletter - 12 May 2022
It is with great great sadness, that we dedicate this weeks news letter in memory of;
Chikamso Nnaji (Kamso) 10/12/2020 – 01/05/2022.

We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, parents and siblings – His big grother Zitel who is also currently a student of ours – our hearts are broken for you dear boy. The two brothers had such a special bond. Zitel would always lovingly dote over and be there for Kamso, if he should have gotten hurt or needed something. Often the two boys would play together on the playground, Kamso happily following the lead of any mischief Zitel would be up to or visa versa.

Kamso’s loss is deeply felt by all staff and kiddies. We can still hear his contageous little laughter.

Fly high with the angels precious boy – you are lovingly remembered and will be deeply missed. . . . .
