HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION

“The words of the Sacred Scripture were not written to remain imprisoned on papyrus, parchment or paper, but to be received by a person who prays, making them blossom in his or her heart.”
-Pope Francis 27 Jan 2021

Pope reminds the faithful that God’s word is written for each of us as a personal message to us in our everyday situations. In spending time with the Scriptures; they can enlighten a situation in which we are living, offering fresh insights and challenging our habitual way of thinking about and seeing the world.

This week in our Grade 8 Religious Education lessons, the learners have been sharing about any religious item, prayer, song or ritual which makes them feel a special connection to God. It was interesting to see how many of our girls chose to share about the bible or other sacred writings. It was lovely to hear the stories about each holy book, some had bibles which have been passed down through many family generations and others still had the very first bible given to them as a gift. The girls shared beautiful stories, poems, prayers, songs and words of wisdom.

The Pope encourages us all to make time in our daily lives to read three or four verses of the Bible, and to listen to what God may be saying to us.

Prayer before reading the Bible.

Lord our God, please open the eyes of my heart and bless me as I read your eternal word. Lord help me to listen and understand your will for me. May your message enter my mind, that I may proclaim it with my lips and have the courage to live it out in my life. Grant me the grace to be a faithful disciple, that I can be a bearer of your light to everyone I meet.  Amen.

RESULTS OF THE FRIENDLY CHESS BLITZ TOURNAMENT

As mentioned last week, Assumption Convent School’s high school chess club  opened the year with a fun and friendly online blitz chess tournament on Wednesday. We are very excited to still be able to participate in this extra-mural. Seven chess players were in attendance on the lichess platform, together with myself, Mr Lauf. We welcomed new members Miksha Rawjee and Keziah Singh, while we anticipate another two or three new members in the next few weeks. A number of girls offered apologies owing to other afternoon activities. Games were played on a 5 minute clock. The results were as follows:

1. Emma Lauf
2. Micaela Brandao
3. Miksha Rawjee
4. Haleigh Knipe
5. Jackie Musakwa
6. Nina Pantovic
7. Keziah Singh

PRIMARY SCHOOL RELIGION

Athazagoraphobia. This is the fear of being forgotten, ignored, or replaced. People with this phobia tend to get anxiety attacks triggered by the feeling of being forgotten and left alone. During one of my remote online lessons last week, we were discussing our lives during this Covid19 pandemic, and the girls were speaking about their own triumphs and trials. One of the girls remarked that she felt abandoned, and when I asked her to explain further, she said it felt like God had forgotten about us here in South Africa.

During these difficult, challenging times, it is tempting to wonder what the Lord’s purposes are. Why has He allowed this to happen? Has He turned away from us and forgotten us? Questions about faith can be intimidating because they are often very difficult to answer. But I do find that questions very often lead to more questions, which inspires healthy debate and leads to understanding and growth. Some questions about faith do not have clear answers. Faith, by definition, is believing in something you cannot see, it is putting trust and confidence into something. No matter how strong willed we are, life will always throw a curveball that knocks the wind out of us. As determined and as strong as we may feel one day, the next day may bring dark clouds, worry and depression. Many of us have experienced those lonely moments, feeling like God has forgotten us.  God counts every tear, hears every prayer, knows every need. There will be times we may not feel Him, but be certain that He has not forgotten us. He will work things out for each one of us at the right time, in the right way.

The story of St Teresa of Avila comes to mind, it helps to understand that we all have moments in our lives where we feel alone and frustrated. St Teresa of Avila struggled with all the problems 16th century life offered. One day she was travelling to one of her convents, the journey had been difficult, she was not well, and the weather was terrible. It was raining heavily, and her horse stumbled, throwing her to the ground. She landed with her head in the mud, and the only thing she was able to mutter to the Lord was, “If this is how you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few!” We all feel like this sometimes. It is during the hard times that our faith very often results in trust, which is a healing balm for fear. Martin Luther King spoke wisely when he said, “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

The weather has not been very kind to us this week, but it did not stop us from having fun and learning along the way.  The children could not wait for coach Megan from Baby Steps 2 Fitness to come release some of their energy this week.  The children worked on their ball skills, hip flexes, special awareness and strengthened their core muscles, fun was had by all.

The children have been learning about their bodies and colours around them this week.  Look at some of the awesome art work your children have created.

What are we learning about next week?

All about me and 5 senses
